Upcoming Band Review: Cavaliers

Cavaliers are a math-rock coated indie band that formed in South England, with likeliness to both Two Door Cinema Club and Bombay Bicycle Club. Since first forming they have conveniently supported the likes of King Charles, as well as Johnny Borrell from Razorlight. Amongst their most recent of actions was the release of their debut EP Gazella, in April of this year; just in time for summer.

Their EP is fast-paced with upbeat melodies and obscure track names, except for the less abstract track, ‘The Hill’. If the track names are anything to go by, then it already hints at the enjoyable personalities and wit of this band, with even their Twitter bio stating 'indie tunes from Winchester that radiate FUN and JOY’. What’s not to love about that?

It is easily and immediately acknowledged that their quick fingerpicking skills on guitar mirror bands such as Two Door Cinema Club as mentioned above, as well as Vampire Weekend and Little Comets. Their sound is one that can be imagined at a summer festival, a sound capable of motivating any stubbornly stood audience member to move and make the most of the space around them.

Gazella opens with ‘Dustin’s First Credit Card’, introduced solely with drums at first before the guitar and drums merge together. It is not until around thirty seconds that the lead singer’s surprisingly deep voice is revealed. The catchy rhythm makes this track a very addictive one; even the singer’s repeated lyrics ‘time well spent’ almost act as a subconscious reassurance from the band that it is no guilty pleasure and is worth the unlimited plays. ‘The Hill’ unravels with a similar introduction to that of ‘Undercover Martyn’ by Two Door Cinema Club. There is an alternation between speedy fingerpicking and strong chord strumming that work in favour of one another to complete this song’s appeal. Some of their lyrics recite negative experiences, such as the confusing and mathematically incorrect, but humorously titled, ‘If I had 50p for Everytime You Stabbed Me in the Back I’d be Looking At At Least 8.60’, which hints at problems with the opposite sex, except surrounded by cheery instrumentals. This first EP is a positive and more importantly, promising start.

The future has a lot in store for this Southern band if they continue down the same paths as inspirations Two Door Cinema Club and Bombay Bicycle, gathering a similar fan-base that these bands have got now. There is a huge amount of potential for an already enthusiastic and mature-sounding band to strive, achieving much more than the attention they have already received as the band members’ average age has yet to reach the twenty years mile stone. Cavaliers have already been spotted and praised by BBC Introducing.

Go and find Cavaliers on Facebook, Bandcamp and Soundcloud! Plus, look out for the release of the music video for ‘If I had 50p for Everytime You Stabbed Me in the Back I’d be Looking At At Least 8.60’ which will be released in July! Their EP is currently available to download for only £2 on their Bandcamp page.
